Recording Performances

Recording from the Mixer to the PC
There are two applications important to making a recording; the Recording Control application that sets the input level from the Mixer, and Audacity which does the actual audio recording.

Recording Control

To launch the Recording Control application look on the desktop for a new shortcut I created called "Record Level Control". If it is missing, double click on the speaker icon in the system tray to open the Volume Control application. Next, click OPTIONS on the menu bar, and select PROPERTIES. In the Properties window check the button labelled RECORDING and click OK.

You should see only one source option - LINE IN and the application widow is real skinny. That is ok. Now you can adjust the volume of the Mixer level coming into the PC if necessary. Hopefully the half-way level should be sufficient.

Setting the Input Volume in Audacity

When you launch Audacity to record the Mixer input to the PC, look just below the Control Toolbar (PLAY or RECORD buttons) and you will see a microphone icon and a slider to the right of it. This is actually part of the the MIXER BAR and is represents the INPUT adjustment for the input type selected (you should see "Line In" in the text box slightly further to the right). This control will adjust the recording volume from 0 to 100% based on how you have the Recording Control level set. So, if you set the Recording Control slider higher to allow more audio signal to be available to a program, thats ok - you can easily adjust the Audacity input level accordingly with this slider.

And this is actually what you should do to adjust the volume! If you click on the Pointer on the input slider it will display the relative volume level - like .5 or .7 or something. Use this slider to adjust the levels and you should never have to touch the actual Recording Control settings while recording.

You will notice that the Line In level (sliding bar) on the Recording Control application is currently close to half-way between minimum and maximum, which seems to be ok for most recording situations. You should still check it before recording anything.

Muting Speaker Output to Prevent Loopbacks
When we are recording from the Mixer to the PC, the Volume Control from the PC should be MUTED using the "Mute all" checkbox in the Volume Control application (speaker icon in system tray). This does not affect recording, but it will eliminate any potential loopback through the PC to the Mixer on channel 32 during performances - an unpleasant side effect. It will however prevent you from listing to the PC with headphones until you un-mute the speaker output.
